Hypnotherapy FAQs

Common questions about hypnotherapy
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that works with the subconscious mind to support positive change in how you think, feel and respond. It uses gentle relaxation and focused attention to help you access a calmer, more receptive state where it becomes easier to update unhelpful patterns.
Will I be asleep or lose control?
No. During hypnotherapy you remain aware and in control and can speak, move and respond at any time. Many people describe the experience as similar to being absorbed in a book or a film – relaxed, focused and still very much present.
What does a session with you look like?
We begin with a conversation about what’s been happening for you and what you’d like to change. I explain what to expect, answer any questions and make sure you feel at ease before we move into the hypnotherapy part of the session. You’ll be invited to sit or lie comfortably, close your eyes if that feels right and simply follow my voice as I guide you into a calmer, more focused state.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person. Some people notice meaningful shifts after just a few sessions while others benefit from a slightly longer series of appointments. We’ll talk about your goals at the start and agree a plan together, and we can review this as we go.
What kinds of issues can hypnotherapy help with?
I work with a range of concerns including anxiety, stress, low confidence, sleep difficulties, pain management, habit change (such as smoking or phone use), weight control and support alongside medical treatment.
You can read more about specific approaches on the Hypnotherapy Treatments page.
Is online hypnotherapy as effective as in-person sessions?
Yes. Online hypnotherapy can be just as effective as in-person work provided you have a quiet, private space and a good internet connection. Many clients like being able to relax in their own environment without the need to travel, which can actually support the process.
Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?
Hypnotherapy is suitable for many people but not everyone. In some situations, such as certain mental health conditions or complex medical histories, I may recommend that you speak with your GP or another healthcare professional before beginning treatment. If anything like this applies to you we can talk it through carefully in your consultation.
What if I find it hard to relax or “switch off”?
That’s very common, especially if you’re used to feeling anxious or “on alert”. You don’t have to do anything perfectly for hypnotherapy to be helpful. My role is to guide you gently, at your pace, so you can find a level of calm and focus that feels accessible for you.
What does it feel like afterwards?
People often describe feeling lighter, calmer or clearer after a session. Sometimes shifts are subtle at first and become more noticeable over the following days as your mind and body integrate the work we’ve done together.
How do I know if hypnotherapy is right for me?
If you’re curious, the best next step is to have a conversation. In a free 15-minute consultation you can share what’s been going on, ask any questions and get a feel for whether working together feels like a good fit.
Still have a question?
If you’re wondering whether hypnotherapy is right for you the next step is simple: get in touch, ask your questions and we’ll explore it together.
